Paper 1 · Short-term recall
Recall
Instructions to candidatesTurn over two cards. If they match, they stay. If they do not, you are expected to remember what was on them. That is the test.
Paper 2 · Sequence retention
Sequence
Instructions to candidatesThe panels will light in a sequence. Repeat it. This requires no talent beyond paying attention, which the Bureau has found to be rarer than expected. One thousand steps constitute a pass. The Bureau does not expect this, and has prepared no ceremony.
Press Begin when ready. The Bureau is ready. The Bureau has been ready for some time.
Paper 3 · Classification
Sorting
Instructions to candidatesEach exhibit belongs in exactly one category. The Bureau has already decided which. Your task is to agree with it.
Paper 4 · Numeracy
Numeracy
Instructions to candidatesSelect the numbers in ascending order. The Bureau acknowledges that you learned this in childhood. It is merely checking that you kept it. Each error adds one second.
Press Begin to reveal the paper. Numbers are shy. They appear when you commit.
Paper 5 · Literacy
Literacy
Instructions to candidatesThe Bureau has chosen a word of four letters. Around here we do not use words like PSHAW or EMCEE. We use working words, like SWEAT or DIRT. Guess it. A letter in the right place is marked solid. A letter in the word but in the wrong place is marked blue. All other letters are hatched, and ignored, like a bad idea. There is no limit to the number of guesses. A clue may be requested. Requests are noted. The Bureau wishes this were not necessary.
Clue, requested and noted on your record
Paper 6 · Filing
Filing
Instructions to candidatesTwelve records have arrived at the Bureau in no particular order. Put them in the order given by the directive. Drag a record to move it, or tap one record, then another, to swap them. File them once. The Bureau does not accept amendments.
Directive
Paper 7 · Patience
Patience
Instructions to candidatesPress Begin, then do nothing. At exactly 0 seconds, press the button again. No clock is provided. Do not scroll, click elsewhere, press a key, or leave. The Bureau will know. Only a genuine press of the button will be accepted. Anything else will be treated as a failure of character. You have one attempt. This is a daily assessment, not a hobby.
Paper 8 · Form filling
Forms
Instructions to candidatesComplete Form BDA-7 by ticking the boxes that should be ticked. Each of the eight boxes carries an instruction. Obey all of them at once. There is exactly one correct form.
DefinitionsIn this form, "if" and "only if" both mean "if and only if". "Other boxes" excludes the box in question. "Above" means a lower number. "This form" means the eight statements below, and nothing above them. Letters are counted without regard to case, and numerals are not letters. "The numbers in all the other statements" means every numeral written in the other seven statements, each at face value. The Bureau is aware that this is a lot.
